Residents warned after rabid bobcat bites dogs

Authorities in Hall County are warning residents to be cautious about rabies after a rabid bobcat bit two dogs.

Animal control officers say the property owner went outside with a rifle and tried to scare off the bobcat, but it refused to leave and so he shot and killed it.

David Jones of the Hall County Animal Shelter says the case is somewhat unusual since most incidents of rabies in the area involve raccoons, foxes and skunks.

The Times of Gainesville reports (http://bit.ly/xMMVcN) that the bobcat's remains were taken to the Georgia Public Health Lab in Decatur, where tests confirmed Wednesday that it was rabid.

Authorities say the dogs have been given rabies shots and must be quarantined for 45 days.
